A Gift to Brighten
your Christmas

The Tippecanoe River village of Pulaski dates back to the late 1830s - and its industrious residents have always taken great pride in their little town. This is never more evident than at Christmastime when the town decks itself out in glittering lights and welcomes fellow county residents - or anyone from anywhere - to drive through and experience the magic of the season.
The light display began in 1989, an extension of the Pulaski Mill Days celebrated earlier that summer as part of the county’s sesquicentennial observance. The annual project has grown to over 100 displays, and hundreds of cars drive through the town from miles around to view the lights every December.
Part of the uniqueness of the displays is that many of them have been made by local residents. “There is a story behind most every display,” reports Barb Crist, one of the project organizers. The centerpiece arch wreath was made by Tim Kuhn and dedicated to the memory of Bryce
Crist who made many of the original figures. Mann Hoover has also developed a talent for making the metal figures and has added over 40 figures in the past seven years. All of the buildings in the village scene were made by the late Bill Stewart. A Jack-in-Box is a new animated display this year. Also new are a gingerbread house, more animals for the Noah’s Ark display, a nativity in memory Chester Hanus at the Presbyterian church, and a Santa’s Express train along the old school.
A community picnic (fourth Sunday in June) has continued every summer since the 1989 Mill Days, with an average of 250 people attending. A raffle has been held each year and was originally the way money was raised for the Christmas decorations. Since 1997 a Pulaski Mill Days Golf Tournament (held the day before the picnic) has been held at Moss Creek Golf Course to help fund the holiday lights. Donations are also accepted.
The display is set up the weekend before Thanksgiving. Volunteers come from all over to help (more than 100 volunteers this year). A carry-in supper follows for the workers.
The Christmas lights display may be viewed from 5:30 to 11 p.m., nightly, through Jan. 5.

A light-sculpture nativity on the lawn of the 96-year-old Presbyterian Church is part of the annual Christmas light display in Pulaski.

These Victorian ice skaters on a lighted pond at the river’s edge also draw attention to several additional displays along the water, including a steamboat and stagecoach.
