The Pulaski County Commissioners approved a resolution Feb. 20 to appoint a Pulaski County Advisory Plan Commission to study and develop a comprehensive plan and land use ordinance.

According to state statute, the purpose of a plan commission is to study and develop a comprehensive plan to promote public health, safety, comfort, convenience and general welfare of citizens and to plan for the future development of their communities.

The planning legislation found in Indiana Code IC 36-7-4 encourages each city, town, and county in the state to create a plan commission.

As prescribed by state law, the advisory plan commission will consist of nine members who will include a county commissioner, a county council member, the county surveyor (or her designee), the Purdue agricultural extension educator, and five citizen members, appointed by the commissioners, who are residents of unincorporated areas of the county and of whom not more than three may be of the same political party.

The new plan commission will be mandated to develop a comprehensive plan and land use ordinance for Pulaski County within 18 months. The commission will report to the county commissioners on a regular basis on the progress of their work.

Once the plan commission prepares a draft for a comprehensive land use plan and zoning ordinances, a public hearing is held. Finally, the commission recommends it to the commissioners who may reject, amend or approve the ordinance.
