Autumn

in Pulaski County 2009

Nature begins to paint bright colors to the October Pulaski County landscape, as seen along the Tippecanoe River near Pulaski

Pulaski County Pumpkin Patch
When there's a crispness to the air and crimson in the maple trees, it must be time to pick out pumpkins at Bonnie's.

Every October, Bonnie’s Punkins welcomes visitors to its annual Craft Day to enjoy the sights, aromas and tastes of autumn in Pulaski County. Bonnie’s, located on U.S. 35 north of Winamac, held its annual fall craft show Oct. 10-11, featuring homemade crafts by local artisans, ham-and-bean dinners, carmel apples, and bluegrass music, plus a variety of pumpkins, Indian corn, dried flowers, mums, gourds, squash and more for sale.

At this time of year, the Jasper-Pulaski Fish & Wildlife Area is the prime spot in the world to view the eastern population of the spectacular “Greater Sandhill Cranes” as they make a migration stopover on their way from nesting grounds in Canada, Wisconsin and Michigan to wintering grounds in southern Georgia and Florida. As many as 30,000 visitors in a season have viewed the sandhill cranes in past autumns at the Jasper-Pulaski FWA north of Medaryville. Most come from nearby states, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio, as well as Indiana. But Jasper-Pulaski staff report they have had visitors from all 50 states and many foreign countries. To learn more visit the Jasper-Pulaski FWA website.

Join the ninth annual Crane Cruise Bike Ride, sponsored by the Medaryville Lions Club, on Saturday, Oct. 17. Ride lengths vary from 10, 25 and 50 miles. Registration is from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Lions Club Buildings where the rides begin. Lunch will be provided. Registration fees are $15 per rider or $35 per family. A program on sandhill cranes will begin at dusk., at the Jasper-Pulaski Fish & Wildlife area. For more information, contact Mick Capouch at 219-863-1332; or email at mick@capouch.net

Gram Turpin, 4, and Megan Shonk, 5, search for the perfect pumpkin at Bonnie's Punkins, north of Winamac.

Visitors browsed craft booths, chose from among a variety of pumpkins, squash and gourds, and enjoyed such treasts as hot cider and warm apple dumplings.
