State Champ ... Again!

In a breathtaking, last second decision, Winamac senior Chris Kasten beat Merrillville’s Dexter Larimore, 3-2, to win his second state wrestling title.

A crowd of 29,348 people came to Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis Saturday, Feb. 19 to witness the the 2005 IHSAA Individual State Wrestling Finals.

Kasten, last year’s state wrestling champ at 215 pounds, moved up a weight class this year.

Kasten avenged his only loss in more than two years with the victory over Larimore in the championship match of the 275-pound weight class.
Larimore, the runner-up at 275 last year, defeated Kasten in the semifinal round of the Merrillville Semistate a week earlier.

Kasten’s results at state were as follows:
First Round:
Kasten (43-1) def. Michael McNelis (30-5) Indianapolis Bishop Chatard (12), fall :35.
Quarter-Finals:
Kasten (44-1) def. Devin Martin (38-6) Fort Wayne Snider (12), fall 5:10.
Semi-Finals:
Kasten (45-1) def. LaShawn Tyler (37-5) Terre Haute North (12), dec. 3-1.
Championship:
Kasten (46-1) def. Dexter Larimore (41-2) Merrillville (11), dec. 3-2.
