MONTEREY - The 13th annual Monterey Days Festival will run Labor Day weekend, with the theme "Where Childhood Memories Last Forever." First National Bank, celebrating its 100th anniversary, will be the honored business and grand marshal of the parade.
The parade will step off at 6 p.m., Saturday (Sept. 4). The Knights of Columbus will hold a pancake-and-sausage breakfast on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The annual American Legion Ox Roast and Bingo event will begin at 11 a.m., Labor Day (Sept. 6).

WINAMAC - The Pulaski County Public Library, Winamac is sponsoring an essay contest for library patrons in September.
To participate, submit a one-page essay about where you would take "Mr. Frommer" and his daughter. Teams of two and four are welcome. Check the Frommer Display this month at the library and enter to win. The prizes include a day trip to Chicago and tickets to the Indiana State Museum! WINAMAC - Property manager, Kevin Snyder will speak on "What's Going on at Tippecanoe River State Park" at 5 p.m., Wednesday (Sept. 8) at the Pulaski County Public Library, Winamac. All are welcome to attend.
Snyder will share his future plans for the park and talk about new features of the park and upcoming events. He will discuss how the park supports the community and county, and his goals and efforts to increase the park's attraction as a tourist destination.

The Pulaski County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) will host a Cover Crop workshop on Sept. 11, near Winamac, at a Cover Crop demonstration site. Twelve plots with different cover crop mixtures have been planted.
Jamie Scott, a Kosciusko County farmer, who has extensive experience with cover crops, is assisting the SWCD and will be speaking at the meeting. The time and site location will be announced; watch for details.

NORTH JUDSON - Kersting’s Cycle Center & Museum of North Judson, will hold its eighth annual Motorcycles, Music & Memories, in loving memory of Nella Kersting, on Saturday, Sept. 11.
The public is invited to attend this long-running, community-building event which will run from 1 to 10 p.m. (eastern time). Families are encouraged to attend and enjoy the fun, food and games. Local charitable organizations will host fundraising booths. Groups scheduled to participate include: Pop Warner Football, high school cheerleaders, band boosters and Sons of the American Legion.

INDIANAPOLIS - Dozens of Pulaski County 4-H'ers have won ribbons at the 2010 Indiana State Fair. This year's 17-day celebration, Aug. 6 - 22, drew about 950,000 visitors. Fair officials say temperatures reached at least 92 degrees during nine of the fair's 17 days. The fair's attendance fell short of the nearly 974,000 people it saw last year when it was first extended from 12 days.
Highlights for local participants included Stacy Gudas, 18, of Kewanna who was named state champion in the 4-H Senior Public Speaking contest at the 2010 Indiana State Fair competition on Aug. 14. Jessica Fox won a spot for Pulaski County in the 4-H Fashion Revue "Top 15" with her outfit in the suit or coat category. Kohl Hoover won reserve grand champion overall in the 4-H Cat Show with his champion shorthair cat.Highlights for local participants included Stacy

A Texas woman was arrested Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 31), on U.S. 421, on preliminary drug possession charges by Pulaski County Deputy John Rogers and his K-9 Robby.
Marta Zapata Guerrero, 56, Pharr, Texas, was detained on a routine traffic stop for equipment violations on her Texas-registered vehicle. She had been southbound on U.S. 421. Further investigation led to Robby being deployed to sniff the air around the vehicle. Robby indicated on two seperate locations on the vehicle to the possible presence of illegal drugs.

WINAMAC - Dr. David Brockett, a Pulaski County councilman for 30 years, died Sunday evening at his residence just outside Winamac.
Dr. Brockett came to Winamac after earning his DVM degree at Ohio State University, and practiced veterinary medicine in the community for 44 years.

The Pulaski County Community Foundation (PCCF) is offering up to $15,000 this fall to charitable and non-profit organizations for community improvement projects. The maximum grant award will be $3,000, allowing at least 5 organizations to receive funds.
New in 2010, grant applications and submissions will be completed online through the Foundation’s webpage at www.pulaskionline.org.

WINAMAC - Starke/Pulaski Habitat for Humanity is seeking volunteers for construction of its newest home at 524 W. Jenkins St. in Winamac. Work began Saturday, Aug. 28 and will continue every Saturday until the project is complete.
All types of volunteers are needed to help with framing, general labor, clean-up and preparing meals for the work crew. Donations of materials – from a box of nails to lumber - also are needed.

Pulaski County 2010 4-H Royalty Katie Bierrum and Natasha Daugherty have donated their “kiss” funds back to the 4-H program with certain goals in mind.
Katie is the daughter of Mike and Kelly Bierrum, and is an eighth-year 4-H member. She has donated her funds back in support of the 4-H Goat Committee to purchase goat pens.
Natasha is the daughter of Bunnie and Curt Daugherty and is also an eighth-year member. She has donated her funds to the Pulaski County Fairboard to support improvements to the wash racks used by hundreds of 4-H members.

INDIANAPOLIS – Stacy Gudas, 18, of Kewanna was named state champion in the 4-H Senior Public Speaking contest at the 2010 Indiana State Fair competition on Aug. 14.
Gudas, a Pulaski County 4-H member, has participated in the 4-H Youth Development Program for 10 years and is the daughter of Arthur and Margaret Gudas. As a State Fair Achievement Trip winner Stacy will travel to Washington. D.C. on Oct. 27-31. The Achievement trip is sponsored by the Indiana State Fair Board. |
