Mildred M. Bennett MEDARYVILLE - Mildred M. Bennett, 86, 515 East 13th Street, Winamac, passed away at 1 a.m., Saturday, July 5, at Hickory Creek Winamac. She was born May 1, 1922, in Medaryville, to Hallie and Edna Brick Saltsman. She married Ellis Bennett on July 2, 1979. He died Nov. 20, 1985.
Survivors include: She was preceded in death by: Mrs. Bennett lived most of her life in Medaryville. She was employed at the Medaryville Garment Factory for over 40 years.She was a member of the Medaryville Christian Church. Janet N. Wentz WINAMAC - Janet N. Wentz, 85, 1295 E SR 14, Winamac, passed away at 1:25 p.m, Friday, June 27, at Life Care Center, Rochester. She was born Nov. 8, 1922, in Constantine , MI, to Charles and Ella Buck Peters. She married Robert Harold Wentz on Jan. 6, 1946, in South Bend. He died Feb. 15, 1981.
Survivors include: Preceded in death by: Mrs. Wentz was a former resident of South Bend and Knox. She was a member of the St. Luke Lutheran Church, Winamac. She was a retired manager of the L.S. Geneva K. Nicholson WINAMAC - Geneva K. Nicholson, 97, 624 E. 13th St., Winamac, passed away at 10:45 a.m., Thursday, June 26, at Pulaski Health Care Center in Winamac. She was born Aug. 20, 1910, in Tuscola, IL, to William and Margaret Korte Vermillion. She married William K. Nicholson on May 22, 1932, in Covington. He died March 17, 1988.
Survivors include: Preceded in death by: Mrs. Nicholson was a former resident of Buffalo, Lafayette, Monticello and Frankfort. She was a former employee of the Kingsbury Ordinance Plant and Purdue University. There will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday (June 28), at Winamac Cemetery, Winamac, with Pastor Mark Pilger officiating. Memorial donations may be given to a charity of the donor's choice.
Linda L. Braun, 64, 2339 Oak Tree Circle, Winamac, passed away at 4:03 p.m, Wednesday, June 25, at Pulaski Memorial Hospital, Winamac. She was born April 25, 1944, in Winamac, to Theodore and Doris Keys.
Survivors include: She was preceded in death by: Mrs. Braun was a member of the Winamac Church of the Nazerene. She was the co-founder of the Braun Corp in Winamac. She was a fundraiser for the cancer and heart funds. She was a contributor to local schools and the CASA Program. Joseph Stanley Marszalik Jr. WINAMAC - Joseph Stanley Marszalik Jr., 75, 1638 East 100 North, Winamac, passed away at 1 a.m., Friday, June 20, at his residence. He was born Jan. 8, 1933, in Chicago, to Joseph and Tekla Mucha Marszalik Sr. He married Sally Czyzyk on Oct., 1955 in Chicago. She survives.
Survivors include: He was preceded in death by: Mr. Marszalik was retired from the trucking business in Chicago. He moved to Winamac in 1960 and began farming. Frances Leona Leman FRANCESVILLE - Frances Leona Leman, 88, 1 West Violet Drive, Francesville, passed away at 10:05 p.m., Thursday, June 19, at Jasper County Hospital in Rensselaer. She was born Dec. 20, 1919, in Metamora, IL, to Henry and Cordelia Gudeman Leman.
Survivors include: Preceded in death by: Miss Leman was a member of the Apostolic Christian Church, and was a Sunday School teacher 42 years at the church. She was empolyed by Parkview Haven Retirement Home for 22 years. She lived in Francesville most of her life. Robert W. Knouff ENGLEWOOD, FLA. - Word has been received of the death of Robert W. Knouff, 88, Rotanda West, Fla., formely of Rensselaer, who died June 19. Emma Mildred Nielsen
She was born April 1, 1923, in Medaryville to Charley J. and Emma E.M. Sonnenberg Shedrow. She married Edward Rasmus Nielsen on Dec. 23, 1945, at the St. John United Church of Christ, Medaryville. He died Dec. 19, 2005.
Survivors include: Preceded in death by: Mrs. Nielsen lived her entire life in the Medaryville area, with the exception of two years during World War II. She was a 1941 graduate of Medaryville High School. She was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Medaryville, where she was a Sunday School teacher and superintendent, and an officer in the Ladies Aide for a number of years. She also was a volunteer for the Pulaski County Mental Health Association. In her earlier years, she was a member of the Aim-Hi Home Economic Club. She was the grand marshall of the Medaryville Potato Fest Parade in 2006 and was a volunteer with the Medaryville Community Potato Festival. She was a homemaker, farm wife, and former claims clerk with Railway Express Co. in Chicago. Evelyn Mae Pelsy FRANCESVILLE - Evelyn Mae Pelsy, 83, 18 Violet Street, Francesville, passed away at 11:15 a.m., Thursday, June 5, at her residence. She was born Feb. 5, 1925, in Medaryville, to Frank and Alma Strantz Lizenby. She married Vernon Pelsy on July 29, 1945 in Medaryville. He survives.

Shirley Marie Ringen WINAMAC - Shirley Marie Ringen, 79, 1311 E 100 N, Winamac, passed away at 5:51 p.m., Monday, June 2, at Memorial Hospital in South Bend. She was born Dec. 31, 1928, in Rensselaer, to Willard and Golden Wolf Tanner. She married John E. Ringen on Nov. 11, 1946, in Francesville. He survives.
Survivors also include: Preceded in death by: Mrs. Ringen was a member of the Global Harvest Church, Monterey, and was a former member of the Monterey United Methodist Church and the WSCS of the church, and the Grace Community Church, Winamac. George Johnson LOGANSPORT - George "Hungry Bear" Johnson, 65, Star City, died at 7:45 p.m. Thursday, May 29, at his residence. Born July 27, 1942, in Star City, he was the son of John David and Pauline Kaster Johnson. On March 24, 1962, he married Carol Ruthann Warner who survives. Surviving with his wife are three daughters, Dawn Dianne Phillips and her husband Randy, of Winamac, Kimberly Renee Johnson, and Stacie Michelle Lopez, of Logansport; three grandchildren, Emily Rayanne Phillips, Indianapolis, Molly Suzanne Phillips, Winamac, and Marco Antonio Lopez, Logansport; one brother, Kenneth Johnson and his wife, Becky, of Fairborne, Ohio; sister-in-law, Carol Ann Johnson, Monticello; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Bev and Ray Warner, Pennsylvania, and Linda and Ed Schawitsch, Terre Haute; several nieces and nephews; and many special friends. He was preceded in death by Rose Helvie and one brother Charles R. Johnson. A 1961 graduate of Star City High School, he worked at Hoosier Refreshment in Logansport for 28-1/2 years. Clarissa A. Madaus MEDARYVILLE - Clarissa A. "Clara" Madaus, 82, 12510 Yuma Island Trail, Culver, formerly of Medaryville, died at 3:25 p.m., Wednesday, May 28, at the Millers Merry Manor, Plymouth. She was born May 1, 1926, in Francesville, to Frank and Anna Maxwell Stiller. She married Vern Keith Madaus in Jan. 1950. He died Oct. 20, 1997.

Evelyn Josephine Weaver WINAMAC - Evelyn Josephine Weaver, 80, 624 East 13th St., Winamac, passed away at 7:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 28, at Pulaski Health Care Center, Winamac. She was born Sept. 15, 1927, in Kouts, to Harry and Rose Funk Cannon. She married Raymond T. Weaver on March 17, 1947 in Monterey. He died on Sept. 29, 2001.

Raymond Keith Maxwell WINAMAC - Raymond Keith Maxwell, 82, 324 Northwest Street, Winamac, passed away at 12:10 a.m., Sunday, May 25, at his residence in Winamac. He was born May 19, 1926, in Monon, to Raymond and Mabel Stath Maxwell. He married Betty Crissinger Maxwell on Dec. 26, 1948 in Francesville. She survives.
Also surviving are: He was preceded in death by: Mr. Maxwell was a member of the the First United Methodist Church in Winamac. He was a Past Master of Winamac Lodge 262 F&AM. He was a member of VFW Post 1728 in Winamac and a member of the South Bend Valley of the the Scottish Rite. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II where he was a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne Unit, serving in Okinawa and Japan. He worked as a telephone installer and maintenance man, employed by the Pulaski-White Rural Telephone Co-op for four years, and for the United Telephone Co. for 31 years. He also worked as a carpenter and delivered motor homes for ACME Transport. He was a frequent volunteer at the Red Cross blood drives, and at the Kiwanis Club luncheons at the Methodist Church. He had participated in several mission trips on behalf of his church. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac. He was born May 23, 1924, in Monon, to Emrile and Julia Quasebarth. He married Iva Jean Scott in 1946. She survives. He married Betty Jean Phelps on Nov. 27, 1977. She died March 11, 1997.

He had worked at a creamery in Monon. He then worked for the Coco-Cola bottling Co. in Monon and became a delivery driver for Coke. He then delivered milk for the Bordens Co. He was also a former TP & W railroad employee. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion in Monticello. Lewis William Hood WINAMAC - Lewis William Hood, 92, of Royal Oak, MD, formerly of Winamac, passed away on Wednesday, May 21, at Talbot Hospice House, Easton, MD.
Born Oct. 23, 1915 in Winamac, he was the son of the late William Thomas and Jenny Sutton Hood. A 1932 graduate of Winamac High School, he was a member of the 1932 basketball team which was runner-up in the Indiana State Championship. Team members were consulted by researchers for the movie Hoosiers which was based on a 1950s match involving a small town team from Milan, Ind. He then attended barber school and during World War II served in the U.S. Navy. For the next 46 years he owned and operated a barber shop in Winamac where he and a partner worked together for the first 27 years. He was a founder of the First Methodist Church Mens Choir in Winamac that he helped establish in the mid-1950s. A Masonic brother since 1947, Mr. Hood achieved 32nd degree as a member of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons, Winamac Lodge No. 262. His wife, the former Helen Rose Calhoun, whom he married in 1938, died in 1995. In 1988 he moved with his wife to the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Helen was ill enough to require entry into a nursing home in Centreville, MD and Mr. Hood began residing with his son, Rich, wife Suzanne, and their children, Lewis, then 7, and Lance, then 3. He resided with his son's family until illness in early 2008 forced him to require full-time health care in Easton. After moving to Royal Oak in 2003 he became a member of St. Lukes United Methodist Church in St. Michaels. A lifelong athlete, he was a frequent and enthusiastic participant in activities, trainings and marathons at the YMCA of Talbot County where he made many friends over the years. Mr. Hood is survived by two children, Rebecca L. Roller of Carmel, and Richard L. Hood and his wife Suzanne of Royal Oak, MD; six grandchildren, Susan Sandlin and her husband Jordan of Columbus, OH, Nancy Fortune and her husband Rob of Noblesville, A. Brock Roller, M.D. and his wife Fabiana of Iowa City, Iowa, Allyson Horst and her husband Monte of Cleveland, OH, Lewis Woodward Hood of Easton, MD, and Lance Warren Hood of Virginia Beach, VA; and seven great-grandchildren, Derek, Aerin and Devyn Fortune, Peyton and Logan Sandlin, and George and Hayes Horst. He was predeceased by one brother, Forrest Hood and a sister Dorothy Burke. A celebration of Lews life will be held on Tuesday (May 27), at 11 a.m., at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., Easton, MD where friends are invited to mingle one hour prior to the service. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday (May 28), at Frain Mortuary, Winamac, where a Masonic Service will also be held that evening. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Thursday (May 29), at First United Methodist Church, Winamac, with burial at McKinley Memorial Gardens. She was born June 19, 1930, in Milwaukee, to John and Inga Nordstrom Trussell. She married Eugene C. Rushmore on Sept. 2, 1950 in Milwaukee. He survives.
Also surviving are: She was preceded in death by: Mrs. Rushmore received her Ham Radio Operators license in 1998 and was certified in Morse Code. Mary Jane Scott WINAMAC - Mary Jane Scott, 77, 515 E. 13th St., Winamac, passed away at 12:43 p.m., Tuesday, May 20, at Hickory Creek, Winamac. She was born Dec. 25, 1930, in Kokomo, to Omar and Margaret Merrill Smith. She married Harold R. Scott on Feb. 22, 1950, in Kokomo. He died on June 17, 2004.

FRANCESVILLE - John William Wuethrich Jr., 89, 13 W. Violet Dr., Francesville, passed away at 9:10 p.m., Sunday, May 18, at Parkview Haven Retirement Home in Francesville. He was born March 26, 1919, in Francesville, to John and Mary Pelsy Wuethrich. He married Violet Dupont on July 29, 1941, in Chicago. She preceded him in death by three days, on May 15, 2008.
Survivors include: Preceded in death by: Mr. Wuethrich was a retired commodities trader and farmer. At the time of retirement, he was a vice president of Heinold Commodities, as well as a member of the Chicago Board of Trade. He then returned to Francesville, resumed his farming activities and encouraged others to engage in agricultural endeavors through his various philanthropic contributions. In his youth, he was a member of 4-H, receiving special recognition for his Poland China hogs. He served as a pilot and Air Force Academy liasion officier in the USAF for 30 years, on active duty (until 1945) and in the reserves. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, at Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel, Francesville; and one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. Robert P. Broda HOBART - Robert "Bob" P. Broda, 66, Kewanna, formerly of Hobart/Merrillville, passed away at his home on Saturday, May 17. He is survived by his wife of 47 years - Carol Bemis Broda of Kewanna; daughters - Michelle (Michael) Kane of Glen Ellyn, IL, Carri (George) Sinnis of Carmel; 6 grandchildren - Alexandra Kane of Glen Ellyn, IL, Krystal Sperry (Broda) of Hebron, Loukas, Landon, Logan and Lawson Sinnis of Carmel; brother - Charles (Mary) Broda of Hobart; sister - Gloria Immel of Hobart; sisters-in-law - Lois Cortese, Connie (Don) Johnson, Pam (Dan) Cooper of Hobart; 15 nieces and nephews; many great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Phillip Broda, parents - Charles and Mary Broda; mother and father-in-law - Roy and Ruby Bemis; brothers-in-law - Kenn "Sam" Immel and Tony Cortese. Mr. Broda was a graduate of Hobart High School, class of 1959. He retired
from Inland Steel where he worked at the #2 cold strip. After retiring
from Inland, he worked at Mastardi-Platt/GE as an environmental consultant.
He moved to Bruce Lake five years ago, where he also worked on the Lake

Joseph A. Kirchgessner WINAMAC - Joseph A. Kirchgessner, 80, 4581 N 250 W, Winamac, passed away at 12:42 p.m., Thursday, May 15, at St. Vincent Medical Center in Indianapolis. He was born Aug. 8, 1927, in Lafayette, to Al and Louise Becker Kirchgessner.He married Mary E. Stonebraker on May 14, 1955, in Lafayette. She survives.
Survivors include: Preceded in death by: Mr. Kirchgessner spent most of his life in the Winamac area. He was a retired farmer. He was a former employee of Alcoa in Lafayette. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving in World War II. He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, and VFW Post #1728, both of Winamac, and American Legion Post #268, Chalmers. Lauren Elyse Huber FRANCESVILLE - Arrangements have been finalized for infant Lauren Elyse Huber, 1 day, daughter of Chad and Pam Huber of Winamac, who passed away Thursday, April 17, at Mandeville Regional Hospital in Mandeville, Jamaica. She was born prematurely at Mandeville Regional Hospital on April 16. Her family currently serves as missionaries in Jamaica. Willis J. Pullins MEDARYVILLE - Word has been received of the death of Willis Jasper Pullins, 84, of 36 Amber Skies, Alamogordo, NM, formerly of Medaryville, on Thursday, April 3, at his residence in Alamogordo. He was born in Medaryville on Aug. 28, 1923, to Harold F and Della Faye Houston Pullins. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Bettilou Wagner, of Alamogordo, NM: a son, Willis T. Pullins and his wife Sandy of Frankfort;: a daughter, Della Gale DeRollo and her husband Anthony, of Alamogordo; five grandchildren: Steve and his wife Kristie, Willis J. Bohac;: Robbyne Mauldin, her husband Jesus; Jeff and his wife Stacy; Brett and his wife Lane. There are three great-grandchildren Benjamin, Faith and Victor Charles Pullins. He is also survived by his sister Betty Faye Schultz, of Reynolds Station, Ky. as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by brothes Lloyd and Harold, Jr. and sisters, Elnora, Maxine, and Wanda. Mr. Pullins served in the U.S. Army in World War II, assigned to the 21st Evacuation Hospital. His unit was in the Asiatic-Pacific theater, serving in Guadalcanal, Bougainville and the Philippine Islands. He received the following citations-Theater Ribbon with two bronze stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal Unit Citation. After leaving the army Mr. Pullins found employment with the Pullman Standard Manufacturing Co. of Michigan City. He was the owner/operator of a Standard Oil service station and a small trucking company in his hometown of Medaryville. He also worked for the Dallas and Mavis Forwarding Company of South Bend. In 1950, he was appointed to the Post Office in Medaryville. Throughout his long career he served as classified clerk, clerk-in-charge, officer-in-charge and then was appointed postmaster until his retirement. After moving to New Mexico, Mr. Pullins worked for several years at Holloman AF Base with the Contractor Operated Civil Engineer Supply System (COCESS) for the 49th Civil Engineer Squadron. He kept busy with many community activities such as 14 years as a Boy Scout leader and an Explorer advisor, and two years as district chairman of the Northern District of the Three Rivers Council, Logansport. He was a member and president of the Band Boosters of Medaryville. He served as president and vice president of the Parent/Teachers Association. He assisted with the White Post Boys 4-H club, was a member of the board of directors of the Future Farmers of America. He was treasurer of the Pulaski County 4-H Fair Board for four years, and was an active member of the Lions International and the American Legion Post 228. He also served his local United Methodist Church as the superintendent of Sunday School services. He is listed in the 1957 edition of Who's Who in Indiana. A memorial service will begin at 1 p.m., Saturday (May 17), in the Medaryville United Methodist Church, with Pastor Susan Jennys officiating. Visitation will precede the service at 12 noon, in the church. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery, Medaryville. The American Legion will conduct military graveside services. David F. Nightengale WINAMAC - Word has been received of the death of David F. Nightengale, 78, LaPorte, formerly of Winamac, who passed away Feb. 26, in LaPorte Hospital.. He was born in Dec. 31, 1929 in Francesville, the son of Herman Albert and Irene Margaret Hackett Nightengale. Survivors include a sister, Sarah Bleicher of LaPorte, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Caroline May Maurer, and three brothers, Richard Charles, Thomas Edward and Phillip D. Nightengale. Mr. Nightengale was also a former resident of Indianapolis and Rockport, Texas. A graveside service will begin at 11 a.m., Saturday (May 17), at Reed Cemetery, Winamac. Ray Allen Steele MEDARYVILLE - Ray Allen Steele, 86, 807 Rosslare Place, Crown Point, formerly of Medaryville, passed away at 2:54 p.m., Wednesday, May 7, at St. Anthony Medical Center in Crown Point. He was born June 6, 1921, in Monon, to William and Sylvia Watson Steele. He married Helen Masterson in 1939 in Pulaski County. She died in 1989. He married Mary Swart Hockney on March 10, 1984 in Crown Point. She survives.
Survivors include: He was preceded in death by: Mr. Steele was a farmer who retired in 2007. He lived in Medaryville and Crown Point most of his life. He was a charter member of the Medaryville Lions Club and was one of the first presidents of the club. He was a former director of the Jasper County REMC from 1962-1980 and served as president of the board from 1971-1980. He was a former director of the Jasper County Fair Board where he served as board secretary for several years. He was a former school bus driver for the Gillam Township School. He served as president of the Wabash Valley Power Asociation from 1975-1976 and served as an executive committeeman from 1977-1980. He served as a board member of the Indiana Statewide Association from 1971-1980. He was a lifelong member of the Medaryville Christian Church. He was the MVP of the Kankakee Valley Basketball Tournament in 1939. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m., Friday, at Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel, Medaryville. Molly A. Shields WINAMAC - Molly A. Shields, 55, Indianapolis, passed away Wednesday, May 7. She was born March 14, 1953 in Monterey, to William F. and Rosella A. Berger Shields. Molly is survived by her mother, Rosella Shields; sister, Martha Mark, husband David; nephew, Ted Welage; and brother-in-law, Steven Welage. Her sister, Theresa Welage, and father, William F. Shields, preceded her in death. Ms. Shields graduated from Warren Central High School (Class of 1971) and worked as a dispersing clerk for Fort Benjamin Harrison Finance Center for 32 years. William Lee Seaney FRANCESVILLE - William Lee Seaney, 86, 509 Countryside Drive, Ossian, passed away at 5:30 a.m., Friday, May 2, at Bluffton Regional Medical Center in Bluffton. He was born Jan. 23, 1922, in Flat Rock, IL, to Chester and Rhoda Pinkstaff Seaney. He married Emma R. Wood on July 28, 1948, in Gary. She died Aug. 20, 2004.
Survivors include: Preceded in death by: Mr. Seaney retired from Gutwein Milling Co. in Francesville after 29
years of employment. He was a former Salem Township Trustee. He was
a member of the Rensselaer Church of the Nazarene where he had served
on the church board, and as Sunday School superintendant, and had been
the church treasurer for many years. He moved to Francesville in 1959,

FRANCESVILLE - Anna E. Lindsey, 104, 101 Constitution Drive, Francesville, passed away at 9:45 a.m., Thursday, May 1, at Parkview Haven Retirement Home in Francesville. She was born Feb. 11, 1904, in Francesville, to William and Emma Topp Tiede. She married John Koebcke on Sept. 1, 1926, in Francesville. He died in December 1979. She married Clarence Lindsey in 1985. He died seven months later.
Survivors include: Preceded in death by: Mrs. Lindsey was a former cook at the Village Inn in Francesville. She lived in Francesville most of her life. She moved to Wolcott, in 1989 at the age of 63 to take care of four children, ages 3, 4 and 5 (two were twins). She took care of them until their teen years. Dennis Jacob "Jake" Albrecht, 59, 222 N. Market St., Francesville, passed away at 7:17 p.m., Thursday, May 1, at Home Hospital, Lafayette. He was born April 13, 1949, in Francesville, to Jacob Jr. and Emily Federer Albrecht.
Survivors include: He was preceded in death by Mr. Albrecht graduated from Francesville High School in 1967. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and the Eagles Lodge.
