Lovetta A. Gilman WINAMAC - Lovetta Allien Gilman, 86, 5514 East 450 South, Star City, passed away at 4:20 a.m., Friday, Jan. 25, at Pulaski Health Care Center in Winamac. She was born March 19, 1921, in Brook, to Clarence and Jesse Dowell Palmer. Shea married William Keith Gilman on Jan. 1, 1940 in Brook. He died on Oct. 21, 1989.
Survivors include: She was preceded in death by: Mrs. Gilman was a member of the Star City United Methodist Church and was a past president of the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Womens Book Club and served on the board of PARC in Winamac. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday (Jan. 30) at the funeral home with Rev. Kevin Marsh officiating. Burial will be in the Chapel Cemetery located at Monon. Russell Leroy Large WINAMAC - Russell Leroy Large, 59, 11710 E. Colfax Ave., Aurora, Colo. (formerly of Knox), passed away at 11:54 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 23, at his residence. He was born July 7, 1948, in Plymouth, to Herman and Evelyn Wagner Large.
Survivors include Evelyn Wagner Large Williams, LaPorte, Mother Preceded in death by: Mr. Large worked for Superior Laundry as a maintenance technician, in Aurora, Colo. He also worked many years in general contracting. He served in the US Army for 12 years. He moved to Colorado in 1978. He was a former resident of Knox. Friends may call after 11 a.m., Thursday, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac. The funeral service will follow at 1 p.m., Thursday (Jan. 31), at the funeral home with Rev. Glen Meyers officiating. Burial will be in the Culver Masonic Cemetery, Culver. Military graveside services will be conducted.
Richard Devon Smith YUMA, AZ. - Richard Devon Smith, 78, of Yuma, Ariz. (formerly of Winamac), died Tuesday, Jan. 22, in Yuma. He was born Jan. 15, 1930, in Francesville, the son of Ernest and Sylvia Smith. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Clara Louise.
Also surviving are sons, Mikel J. Smith and wife, Jo Kyle, of Yuma; Steven D. Smith of London, England; three grandchildren, Lt. Kelly Jo Smith and husband, Irven, of Baltimore; Earl D. Smith and Jill, of Bel Air, Md.; Eric M. Smith of Franklin, Ohio; and one great granddaughter, Magdalena Rose Smith of Bel Air, Md. His surviving sisters are Arlene Gutwein and husband, Adam, of Medaryville; Phyllis Anderson and husband, Don, of Granbury, Texas; Madeleine Gutwein and husband, Fred, of Francesville, and Diane Culp and husband, James, of Francesville; and brother, Ronald Smith of Lafayette. He was preceded in death by sister Paulina Smith. Mr. Smith retired at age 45 and loved spending summers in Winamac, and wintering in Yuma. Winamac was home for many years to Mr. Smith and his family. They owned and operated the Indian Head Restaurant in Winamac from 1964 to 1976 and owned the Indian Head Motel which they built in 1968. He also had a pilot's license since age 16. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, Monday (Jan. 28), with the funeral service following at 2 p.m., at . Kammann Mortuary, 795 W. 28th St., Yuma.
Lauramay Koebcke WINAMAC - Lauramay Koebcke, 89, 7082 W 100 S , Kewanna,passed away at 4:20 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 19, at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. She was born Sept. 24, 1918, in Redkey, to Lewis C. and Sylvia Berrier Wandrey. She married Russell Edward Koebcke on Dec. 17, 1938 in Valparaiso. He died Aug. 4, 2005.
Survivors include: She was preceded in death by: Lauramay was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Winamac, and a member of the women's guild and the alter guild of the church. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at Frain Mortuary and one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Thursday (Jan. 24), in St. Luke Lutheran Church, Winamac, with Pastor Carl Fitchett officiating. Burial will be in the Bruce Lake Cemetery located at Lake Bruce. Memorial donations may be given to St. Luke's Church
WINAMAC - Mabel Irene Peck, 90, 1465 S. Wolf Lane, Winamac, passed away at 5:31 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Starke Memorial Hospital in Knox. She was born Oct. 9, 1917, in Michigan City, to Silas and Mabel Cowgill Craig. She married Russell Peck Sr. on June 20, 1934, in LaPorte. He died Dec. 6, 1981.
Survivors include: Mrs. Peck was formerly of Michigan City and had lived in Monterey and Star City for many years. She worked as a housekeeper. A memorial service will be held at a later date. No visitation will be held. Memorial donations may be given to the Humane Society.
Betty Jane Willson Zehner WINAMAC - Betty J. Wilson Zehner, 73, 6123 N 200 E, Monterey, passed away at 4:05 p.m., Friday, Jan. 11, at Pulaski Memorial Hospital in Winamac. She was born Nov. 17, 1934, in Rochester, to Thomas and Ruth Hosmer Wilson.
Survivors include: Preceded in death by: Mrs. Zehner was a lifelong resident of Monterey. She was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church, Monterey. She was a 1953 graduate of Monterey High School, and in 1956 she graduated from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing, Gary. She was a registered nurse for 51 years. She was one of the original nurses who helped open Pulaski Memorial Hospital, Winamac. For 30 of her 51 years of nursing she worked in the surgical area. She formerly worked at Starke Memorial Hospital, Knox, Miller's Merry Manor, Culver, Monterey Doctor's Clinic, and the old Woodlawn Hospital, Rochester. She retired in May of 2007 as the nurse at the Pulaski County Jail. She was the instructor for the first EMT class held at Pulaski Memorial Hospital in the 1970's. She was also a member of the Nurses Association. She was a former 4-H Leader, Home Extension Club member, and member of the Monterey PTA. She was the co-founder of the Monterey "Birthday Group." Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, at Frain Mortuary. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday (Jan. 16), in St. Anne's Catholic Church, Monterey, with Rev. Shirley A. Shidler FRANCESVILLE - Shirley A. Shidler, 75, 135 N. Harrison St., Francesville, died at 12:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 10, at her residence. She was born Feb. 29, 1932, in North Judson, to Ezra I. and Rosa Lloyd Jones.. She married John William Shidler on April 1, 1950, in Winamac. He died April 19, 1997.
Survivors include: Mrs Shidler retired in 1995 as a custodian at West Central High school. She had also worked as the lunch cook at the Francesville IGA. She attended the First Baptist Church, Francesville. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m., Sunday, at Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel, Francesville. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday (Jan. 14), at the funeral home. Dennis Gutwein will officiate. Burial will take place in Independence Cemetery, Medaryville. Memorial donations may be given to: American Cancer Society or the Jasper County Hospice.
WINAMAC - E. Wayne Strasser, 90, 8183 Heyward Drive, Indianapolis, formerly of Winamac, died at 6:14 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 9, at Miller's Senior Living Community, Indianapolis.
He was born July 10, 1917 in Star City, to Oscar and Verda Davis Strasser.
Survivors include: Preceded in death by: Mr. Strasser served in the U.S. Army as a Sergeant during WWII. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 40 years as a mail carrier out of the Winamac Post Office. He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church.
